Lesson for December 16
Sorry--Laura was going to write up the lesson, but got called away to the hospital because of a family member. If anyone would like to summarize, she would be happy to include it here.
Lesson from December 9
Thanks to Barbara Alldredge for giving the lesson and summarizing it for the blog:
Righteous Living in Perilous Times
We are living in the winding up stages of the world. These times have been prophesied since almost the beginning of time. The world is in for a serious house cleaning. We get to be the ones to start first with our own house. We get to clean our own homes. We get to be the example, the immovable anchors in the world. We get to be the light in the world that will draw God's other children to Him.
Favorite Quotes from lesson:
We are all under the obligation of making this world a happier place for our having lived in it.
Make YOUR influence felt. (Small imperfect book marks were handed out as a reminder that each of us has a part in the Lords work. Each of us, though small and imperfect have something to give to Make Your Influence Felt) Hey - if there are some that would like a book mark, I have extra and would love to share.
I pray that in our hearts and in our homes there may abide that spirit of love, of patience, of kindness, of charity, of helpfulness that enriches our lives and that makes the world brighter and better because of it.
Comments:
It has been prophesied that the Lord will come with great calamities that have been prophesied, or He can come in peace. It is up to us. We can create that peace - even if it is in our hearts. We can feel His peace, even when the world is falling apart around us.
Jessica Lewis: Several years ago during a Sunday School lesson the question was asked - Why has our time in the history of the world been talked about and written about so much more than any other time? After a long pause brother Ted Gibbons said- It's because we know the outcome. We know who wins. Everything has been leading up to this event. We get to pick our team and be part of the great last play of the game. It gives Jessica great comfort to know that she gets to pick her team and be on the Lords side.

Dec. 2 lesson--Of You It Is Required to Forgive
Megan Williams gave the lesson. Linda Campbell told the story about George Albert Smith when he asked for forgiveness of the man who had spread false rumors about hime, because he had been angry against him. The man said he himself should be the one asking for forgiveness. Jessica Lewis said that withholding forgiveness from someone is a serious sin. Thinking about your anger and saying it out loud makes it worse. Sister Byrne said to go quickly to the offended and ask forgiveness so it gets over faster. Give people the benefit of the doubt. Crystelle Boyadjian spoke about how important it it to forgive something that happened years ago. Don't let it get between you and the Lord. Megan asked how we can get into the condition to forgive? Jessica Lewis said that the stronger our faith in Jesus Christ, the stronger our understanding of forgiveness and the more likely we are to forgive. Emily Campbell spoke about being a beggar before the Lord and how realizing that helps us so we can want to repent. Linda Campbell talked about letting things go. The discussion turned toward forgiving people who have done terrible things, but not forgetting so we are put in danger again. But we do have to let God do the forgiving and know they are in God's hands.Heather said that charity is the greatest and if you don't forgive you aren't close to God. Sister Bush said if you have a desire, you are in the process and you want that peace. Dorothy Davis said There are many reasons why the Savior wants us to access the atonement. So we are the ones who are hurt more than they.

November 25 Lesson--Can Ye Feel So Now?
Jessica Lewis gave the lesson on Elder Quentin L. Cook's October Conference talk, "Can Ye Feel So Now?" Elder Cook took his message from Alma. He said, "In one of the most profound verses in all of scripture, Alma proclaims, “If ye have experienced a change of heart, and if ye have felt to sing the song of redeeming love, I would ask, can ye feel so now?"
Jessica drew two columns on the board. The column to the left was about things that can stop people from feeling the Spirit. The column to the right was about things that can help people feel the Spirit. Several sisters read quotes from the talk that told of what could go in either of the columns. Things that stop the Spirit from dwelling in people's lives include worldly desires, the media, the wrong music, and wrong choices. Things that bring the Spirit closer include reading scriptures, living the gospel, and being humble. Elder Cook said, "Local leaders across the world report that when viewed as a whole, Church members, especially our youth, have never been stronger. But they almost always raise two concerns: first, the challenge of increased unrighteousness in the world and, second, the apathy and lack of commitment of some members. They seek counsel about how to help members to follow the Savior and achieve a deep and lasting conversion." He concluded by saying, "As our youth follow President Monson’s counsel by preparing to serve missions, and as we all live the principles the Savior taught and prepare to meet God,25 we win a much more important race.26 We will have the Holy Ghost as our guide for spiritual direction. For any whose lives are not in order, remember, it is never too late to make the Savior’s Atonement the foundation of our faith and lives."

RS Lesson November 18--Bringing Up Children in Light and Truth
Barbara Alldridge gave our lesson today from the Teachings of President George Albert Smith.
The main point is that George Albert Smith taught that parents should be good examples and teach their children gospel principles.
Sister Alldridge told this story from the lesson:
In his own home, George Albert Smith tried to follow his parents' example of teaching with patience and love. His daughter Edith recalled an experience from her youth:
"He continually counseled us about our behavior, emphasizing honesty and fairness. I remember one day when on my way home from my piano lesson, the streetcar conductor overlooked collecting my fare. … Somehow he passed me by, and I reached my destination still holding my nickel in my hand, and frankly quite elated that I had made the trip free.
Page: 235
"… I ran gleefully to Father to tell him about my good fortune. He listened to my story patiently. I was beginning to think I was a great success. … I was sure that the conductor did not know I had not paid for the ride, and therefore all was well.
"When I had finished my tale, Father said, 'But, darling, even if the conductor doesn't know about this, you know and I know and Heavenly Father knows. So, there are still three of us who must be satisfied in seeing that you pay in full for value received.'"
Edith went back to the street corner and paid her fare when the streetcar returned. She later expressed gratitude for the way her father handled the situation: "I am indeed thankful for a Father who was wise enough to kindly point out the error to me, because if it had been overlooked, I could have thought he approved, and I might have tried something similar another time."2 [See suggestion 1 on page 244.]
Sister Roundy told of having her soul saved by a family who took her in and surrounded her with love when she was a teenager, as well as teaching her about the Spirit present in their family home evenings.
When you are in the middle of a hurricane, you can't see it, so extended family members
Can be a tremendous influence.
Sister Lopez said when children use their agency and choose wrong, not to beat yourself up. Just love them. Sister Alldridge said to go get them.
Sister Young said her husband does a one on one with his children every Sunday night. She said dinner times are great for communication.
sister Lewis said to cultivate good desires by participating in good things.

Buttermilk Dressing - makes about 2 cups
1 ½ cups mayonnaise
¼ cup buttermilk - or more if you want it thinner
½ tsp MSG (or Accent) - optional
½ tsp salt
pepper to taste
¼ tsp onion salt
¼ tsp garlic salt
2 TBSP chopped parsley (2 tsp dried)
Mix together and refrigerate.
Chicken Salad for Sandwiches
cooked, diced or canned chicken
2 stalks celery, diced
1/4 tsp onion salt
salt and pepper to taste
½ cup mayonnaise/salad dressing - adjust more or less to the texture you like
Hot Chicken Salad
2 cups cooked, diced chicken (or turkey)
2 cups diced celery
½ cup slivered almonds
½ tsp salt
2 TBSP grated onion
1 cup Miracle Whip
2 TBSP lemon juice
½ cup grated cheese
1 cup crushed potato chips
Combine and toss lightly chicken, celery, almonds, salt, onion, Miracle Whip, and lemon juice. Put in 9" square pan.
Sprinkle cheese and potato chips on top. Bake 450E for 10 - 15 min.
Chicken Macaroni Salad
4 chicken breasts - sprinkle with seasoning salt and pepper, cook on bbq grill
1 small pkg shell macaroni, cooked according to package directions, drain
1 bag frozen vegetables, put in colander and spray with water to thaw
4 radishes, chopped
½ red onion, chopped
any other additive you like (black olives, cucumber, bell pepper, etc.)
(If by chance you happen to have a bag of Schwan’s pasta/vegetable blend, use that and only add chicken, radishes,
onion, dressing.)
Cut chicken into chunks and mix everything in a big bowl. Pour about 1 cup buttermilk dressing (recipe above) over it
and mix it up. You can eat it now or refrigerate and serve later.
Chicken Curry Soup
3 chicken breasts
6 cups water (more of you like)
2 Tbsp chicken bouillon or chicken soup base (Better than Bouillon)
2 tsp curry (or more if you like)
1 cup shredded carrots
1 cup chopped celery
pepper to taste
1 cup small macaroni (I found these little short tubes of macaroni at Target - the kids loved them because they were
different that any we had ever had before)
1 - 2 cups frozen mixed vegetables (or whatever kind of vegetables you like)
Cook the chicken in with the water, curry and pepper. When the chicken is cooked cut it up or shred it - whatever you
prefer. (I strained the broth from cooking the chicken to get the globs out. Make sure you keep the broth, though!) Put
the cut up chicken and broth back in the pan and add the bouillon, carrots and celery.
Cook and drain the macaroni, then add to the soup. Add the frozen mixed vegetables and let it heat through.
I wasn't sure how much curry to use, so I started out with 1 tsp, but added more and eventually ended up with about 2
tsp in it. It gives it a really mild curry taste - not too overpowering. You can add more to the soup if you want more curry
taste.

Interview: Heather Brenda Montjoie Cantrell
Heather Brenda Montjoie Cantrell says that you can never
spoil a baby with too much love. You can
spoil babies with other things, but not too much love. Love is a theme in her
life. She has a lot to love.
For one, she loves her garden and many members of the ward
have shared their love of gardens with her. She wants to be a gardener in
heaven where even the weeds will be flowers. In her garden, Heather loves
everything, except the roses and things with thorns. She loves her fruit trees
(even if the birds do peck at the fruit) and her flowers, especially the
hydrangeas. She’s filled her window wells with the flowers she loves. One of
her favorite activities is to be in her garden listening to the bees and watching
the hummingbirds. However, she doesn’t like cockroaches, spiders, and snakes.
For exercise, she loves to walk.
Other things that she loves include knitting, crocheting,
and cake decorating. These are creative activities that give her ways to make
things for people she loves, like the afghans she makes for her children and
the crocheted edges she works on for baby burp cloths given to young mothers.
Heather’s knitting, crocheting, and gardening remind her of
people she loves, especially her grandmother who taught her to knit and crochet
and garden when Heather was only six years old in Johannesburg, South Africa,
where Heather was born in the Queen Vic Hospital. She lived there until May 31,
1961 when her father got a job in Mulfulira, Northern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe).
Heather’s grandmother was a very important person in her life and made her feel
like she was her grandmother’s favorite granddaughter. Heather wears hats to
church because of she made a pact to do so with her mother and grandmother.
She’s lived many places in her life and done many things. She was runner-up to Miss Copper Belt in Africa, did professional modeling, was a flight attendant for South African Airlines. With her husband, Ted, who was in the U.S. Army, she also lived in Germany and various states. She was able to come to Brigham Young University after she joined the Church and has become a huge fan of BYU football. She even loves the Salt Lake City Jazz.
Family is very important to Heather. She loves her children (8,
although she lost one baby) and grandchildren (3). She thinks it’s fun to have
grandchildren. She also loves the gospel and her friends in the ward. So, you
can see that Heather has a lot to love.
